Double Duty Beauty

January 4th, 2011

Your beauty basket runneth over.  Some of that stuff you bought because you needed it (or at least you really thought so).  Some of it wooed you with great advertising.  Some of it was just too gosh darn cute.

The good news is, many products are a lot more than just a one trick pony.  They morph into a multi-use affair with the addition of common ingredients found around the house, or even as they are.

Conditioner

A good daily use conditioner is a necessary staple, especially for those who need to wash their hair often.  It has to get the job done without being too heavy or creating build up.  Paul Mitchell’s The Conditioner is an excellent buy that has stood the test of time.  It was part of the original three products that launched the line back in the 80′s and it still garners praise from the industry.

Double Duty: If your hair tends to be dry, or if you are a curly, you could really stand to skip the shampoo step all together and do a conditioner-only wash.  These products have enough mild surfactants to cleanse without the stripping and tangling.  For a clarifying wash, add a bit of baking soda to your conditioner.  This will help get rid of any product build up and freshen the scalp.

Get this – you can also use conditioner in place of shaving cream!

Mild Facial Cleansers

A gentle, emollient, water soluble (easily rinsed) cleanser is a good idea for all skin types.  Even if you have oily skin, deep cleansing products aren’t necessary every time you wash your face.  You want to retain moisture balance without stripping the skin.  At night, when you want to remove your makeup and get rid of impurities from the day, Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser is a gel-cream that will sooth the skin and effectively remove cosmetic products and dirt.

Double Duty: A mixture of equal parts baking soda and gentle cleanser make a great exfoliating scrub.  As you age, the skin does not slough away dead cells on its own as easily as younger skin.  Exfoliating boosts cell turnover, gets rid of flaking skin, and leaves you with a healthy glow.

Moisture-Rich Conditioners

Especially if you are coarse or curly, your hair constantly craves moisture.  Thick, rich conditioners are needed to tame your tresses and keep things manageable.   Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Conditioner reconstructs the hair with keratin and argan oil.  ISH Rescue Ionic Conditioner is an awesome detangler and protects the hair from heat styling.

Double Duty: Turn your conditioner into a luxury hair treatment with hot oil.  Take a spoonful each of olive oil and castor oil.  Castor oil is an excellent humectant and it’s also great for sealing the hair cuticle.  You can also use your other favorite oils like jojoba oil and coconut oil.  Heat them in the microwave for 30 seconds and mix them into 1/4 cup of conditioner.  Apply to the hair and let it sit for about 10 minutes.  It will work best with heat, and Hair Therapy Wrap will keep your hair warm for up to 30 minutes.  Your hair will be super hydrated and the oils will give your hair a lovely sheen.

Tea Tree for Two? Share this Hair Secret!

December 10th, 2010

You’ve seen it in lotions, shampoos and even in cosmetics. It’s fragrant, it’s therapeutic, it TINGLES, and it just may be your secret to silky, swishy hair!

Extracted from the leaves of the robust Australian melaleuca tree, tea tree oil is an ingredient the cosmetic and personal care industry is finding plenty of uses for because of its miraculous restorative and antiseptic properties.

Look for hair products with tea tree oil if you:

  • have dandruff or are frequently outside, exposing your scalp to the sunshine. Tea tree oil keeps in check the growth of bacteria that thrives on flaky or oily scalps.
  •  have an itchy scalp. Tea tree oil is an organic solvent that soothes and cleans your scalp, all while working at the root of the problem to naturally target microbes with its antiseptic properties.
  • want shinier, fuller hair growth. Tea tree oil helps to gently unclog blocked hair follicles of all grease and pollution you’ve collected throughout the day. This not only promotes healthier hair growth, but greater hair density!
  • want more moisture in your hair, or if you have frizzy hair. Tea tree oil naturally helps your hair to retain hydration, all while conditioning and smoothing texture.

Paul Mitchell – Winner Takes All

November 23rd, 2010

John Paul Mitchell Systems was founded in 1980 with three products and has grown to be one of the most respected brands in hair care. Co-founders John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell shared a vision and a commitment to salon quality products, even creating a solar-powered Awapuhi farm in Hawaii that the company still uses today! They’ve never sold the company and it is currently run by CEO John Paul and Mitchell’s son Angus, a celebrated stylist in his own right. With dedication like this, is it any wonder that the beauty industry sits up and takes notice?

Every year, many beauty publications bestow honors on the products that rock their socks off, and Paul Mitchell tops their lists with some amazing offerings.

Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam

This is a product that delivers flexible control, eliminates frizz and defines the natural curl pattern without stealing moisture and leaving your hair crunchy. It’s taken FOUR awards for best styling product from Seventeen, Naturally Curly, Beauty Launchpad, and Behind the Chair Stylist Choice.

Paul Mitchell The Conditioner

This is a product with history! It’s one of the three original products in the Paul Mitchell line and it still garners praise from the industry. It’s Beauty Launchpad’s Reader’s Choice 2009 winner for Best Conditioner (Normal Hair).

Hold It Right There!!!

November 19th, 2010

Aren’t elegant updos one of the trickiest, most deceptive hair styles? Effortless, upswept hair? Let’s face it… there’s nothing effortless about it! Bouncy ringlets don’t just appear as you air dry after a shower.

It is very tricky to manipulate your hair without it looking forced. Styling products designed to hold the hair in place often make for crunchy, untouchable helmet-head. What you need are products that hydrate and shape the hair without being hard or sticky. They need to go a long way with a little product. Where does one find such a thing? Well…

Alterna Hemp Seed Styling Mud is great for ponytail days and half-up/half-down styles. Scoop a little onto your fingertips and smooth into the sides of your hair to tame frizz and keep those pesky side hairs from sticking out. The hold lasts all day and the Hemp Seed Oil keeps your hair nice and shiny!

Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam is an awesome frizz-tamer and the winner of FOUR awards – including ones from Seventeen Best of Beauty and NaturallyCurly.com. It’s a lightweight mousse formula that you can smooth into damp or dry hair to keep it in place when you style it. It’s also great for the wet look on your curls – just scrunch it into damp hair and air dry.
